What Is Sheet Metal and How Is It Used?

As reported by The Engineering Choice in their article, “What Is Sheet Metal? – Definition, Types, and Uses”, sheet metal is a highly versatile material formed into thin, flat pieces through industrial processes and used across numerous industries due to its adaptability, strength, and range of metal types.

Sheet metal can vary widely in thickness—from ultrathin foil and leaf to structural-grade plate over 6mm thick. In the U.S., thickness is typically measured using a traditional system called gauge, where a higher gauge number indicates a thinner sheet. For example, steel sheet metal generally ranges from 30 gauge (very thin) to 7 gauge (thicker). Importantly, gauge standards differ between ferrous and nonferrous metals, which can impact material selection in engineering and manufacturing.
